A Long Walk

Down at the Roxy cinema yesterday for a screening of Gibby Zobel’s fascinating documentary on the Brazilian landless farmers’ movement (MST). The film follows some of the 12,000 ’sem-terras’ who walked 127 miles from Goiânia to the capital, Brasilia, in 2005.

More than 50 demonstrators were injured in clashes with police at the end of the 17-day march, but Zobel doesn’t point the finger, choosing instead to paint an open, sympathetic portrait of the MST’s long struggle for agrarian reform.

It’s definitely worth seeking out the film if you get the chance, and the director is hoping to run a few more screenings in the UK and Brazil this year. Check jungledrumsonline.com for more info.
